Many say Mineral de Pozos is the ‘next’ San Miguel but if so, it will be years. A more rural location surrounded by farmland and a smaller footprint without the grand Gothic church in the Jardin in SMA, Pozos must be appreciated for its’ continued authenticity and commitment to the Wild West vibe and cowboys on horseback.
Cobblestone streets and narrow rolling roads are the same in each puebla. Colonial architecture with cantera accents survive in both towns. Church bells clang the same too. It stops there.
SMA is MUCH bigger, much busier, more noisy and congested, with an air pollution problem from its’ growth. Not to say it affects ones’ ability to enjoy the magical city but people are becoming concerned and looking to be outside San Miguel now for a cleaner, less congested option. Enter Mineral de Pozos 45 minutes outside San Miguel.
If you want to vacation in SMA and have lots to do, see, dine, stay in SMA. If you prefer a quieter, less Americanized environment, make day trips to SMA. They have everything! But we here in Pozos, have fresh air, unclogged streets, no air pollution and a few lovely places to stay to rival any rentals in San Miguel.
You can walk from your rental doorstep anywhere in Pozos including out into the desert for sweeping blue skies or up to The Spa or across the street for chicken mole enmoladas or just sit in the jardin with an ice cream cone. When you must be in chaos…hop in a taxi and you are off to SMA for 650 pesos to compare San Miguel de Allende to Mineral de Pozos. Happy trails! Kelly
